The Lessons

Four practical lessons on workplace email, meetings, presentations and feedback, each with a structure, pitfalls and an exercise.

Work through these in order or jump to the one you need this week. Each ends with a small exercise. Doing it matters more than reading it.

Lesson 1: Email that gets answered

Busy people skim. Put the request or the key fact in the opening lines, keep each message to one topic, and finish with a clear next step. Use the subject line to say what the email is and what it needs.

Try this: rewrite your last long email in five lines. See how to write a clear work email.

Lesson 2: Meetings

Read the agenda, bring one prepared point and say it early. Confirm any action you take on in writing the same day.

Try this: in your next meeting, speak once in the first ten minutes. More in speaking up when you are new.

Lesson 3: Presentations

Lead with your conclusion, then give the three reasons that support it. Cut anything that does not serve those reasons. Rehearse out loud at least twice; reading slides in your head is not rehearsal.

Try this: say your main point in one sentence. Our prep plan walks through the rest.

Lesson 4: Feedback

Receive it calmly, clarify what you heard, and show what you changed. When giving it, describe the situation, the behavior and the effect.

Try this: ask a colleague for one thing to improve. See taking feedback well.

What ties them together

Respect for other people’s time and attention. Every lesson comes back to that.
