How do I take feedback well at work?
Listen without defending, ask one clarifying question, thank them, and show what you changed afterwards.
Listen without defending yourself. Ask one question to make sure you understand. Thank them. Then show, later, what you did with it.
In the moment
- Let them finish before responding.
- Take notes. It signals you take it seriously and helps you remember.
- Ask for an example if the feedback is vague.
- Say thanks, even if it stings.
Afterwards
Give yourself a day before deciding what you think. Pick one change you can make. Then, at a natural moment, tell the person what you tried. That closes the loop and makes them more likely to help again.
Asking for it
Do not wait for reviews. After a piece of work, ask: what is one thing I could do better next time? Specific questions get specific answers.
Giving it
When it is your turn, describe the situation, the behavior and its effect. Keep it about the work, not the person.
Feedback is part of the lessons. Related: writing clear emails.
